Does the U.S. withhold any tax?

The U.S. withholds tax on dividends paid to shareholders of U.S. securities. There is no tax withheld on the selling of shares.

Non-U.S. residents with a completed W-8BEN (or W9 for U.S. tax residents) tax form are subject to a 15% withholding tax on dividend payments; without a lodged tax form, that’s 30%.

Stake arranges to have the appropriate form completed and lodged on your behalf through our U.S. broker partner when you make your first deposit. We recommend you obtain independent and professional advice regarding your personal tax implications.

Australian Tax File Number

Your Australian TFN does not affect your U.S. tax status. You’ll still need to declare any income derived from dividends and capital gains on your Australian tax return.
